What if … ?

Home / Film / What if … ?

dear surfers,

long time without writing… last time, we were telling you about the beginning  of the editing process.

and today, we would love to tell you that the editing is done, but we wont. though we are happy to comment that such process is close to its end.

it has been 3 months of pure and hard montage. together with our great editor, Jorge Sánchez (yes, the guy you see in the attached picture), we have created already 8 versions of the film.

the first one lasted exactly 60 minutes, and that was way more than we expected.

the work and the editing kept going on, and later we were already on a 40 min. film. suddenly, 20 mins were gone and we were still being completely respectful to the original screenplay.

but we felt it was still long, and so we kept working on rhythm and tempo.

over 350 hours (and counting) in front of the computer -and many others before sleeping or in the tram, metro, parks…- watching, analysing, doing playbacks, testing… always asking ourselves: «what if?»

we haven’t stopped asking ourselves that question, as a starting point to explore at its max the narrative potential of «bolero for surfing in moravia». and this poweful question has taken us to a 33 minutes long film.

luckly, our progress allows by now to think and work already on sound. the «what if?» now goes more through our ears than our eyes. everything that can be heard, is interpreted now as a tool for storytelling and emotions.

many of you are familiar with all the stages involved in the making of a film. from the scratch idea until the final screening.

but others are far from these dynamics and are surprised or stranged by the length of this process.  well,  don’t worry, specially on student projects with limited budgets, these times are almost normal.

even more when the director and the editor are surprised by how the filmed footage asks and almost demand rhythms and approaches that were not so clear in the original screenplay… and that’s how the first cut of the film (an automatic assemble of the script page by page) lasted 60 mins. and now, after depurations and discussions, we are getting close to 30 mins.

and that’s another fascinating process and/or lesson. how we wrote a shortfilm and we have now a medium-length film.  and that’s why cinema is beautiful: because it’s always alive and never stops mutating.

and thanks to you and your contribution, today we are able to appreciate such beauty … and soon you will appreciate it as well…

: )

hugs and regards from prague.
